Most of us naturally walk into a room thinking about what we need, what we want, or what we hope to receive.

Jesus walked into every room differently.

He came looking for people to help, needs to meet, and lives to impact. In Matthew 20, Jesus challenges His followers to rethink what greatness really means. Instead of pursuing status, recognition, or position, He points to the life of a servant.

The question for us is simple but uncomfortable:

Did I come to serve or be served?

Opening Prayer

Father, thank You for bringing us together today. Help us be honest about our attitudes and priorities. Show us where we can become more like Jesus and give us willing hearts to serve others with love. Amen.

Conversation Starters

Option A (Light)

What's a small act of kindness someone did for you recently that made a bigger impact than they probably realized?

Option B (Deeper)

When you hear the word "servant," what thoughts or feelings come to mind?

Scripture

Matthew 20:25–28 (NIV)

Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.

Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—

just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Discussion Questions

What stands out to you most from Jesus' words in this passage?

Why do you think serving is often overlooked when people think about what defines Jesus?

How does our culture typically define greatness or success?

How does Jesus redefine greatness here?

What are some situations where you find yourself wanting to be served rather than looking for ways to serve?

Why do you think serving can sometimes be difficult even when we know it's important?

Who has modeled servant-hearted living well in your life?

Real Life Application

Think about your typical week.

Where do you spend most of your time?

At home?

At work?

At school?

With friends?

In which of those places could you intentionally adopt a servant mindset this week?

Is there a need you've noticed recently that you've been tempted to ignore?

What would taking action look like?

What's one practical way you can serve someone this week without expecting recognition or appreciation?

How might your relationships change if serving became a daily habit rather than an occasional act?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for showing us what real greatness looks like. You chose to serve, even when it cost You everything. Help us follow Your example this week. Open our eyes to the needs around us, soften our hearts toward people, and give us the courage to take action. Amen.

Next Steps

This week, choose one person and one practical act of service.

Don't do it for recognition.

Do it simply because that's what Jesus would do.

And if you're looking for a place to grow alongside others, we'd love for you to join us Sunday as we continue following Jesus together here in Tallahassee.
