When life gets stressful, uncertain, or overwhelming, we all run somewhere for comfort, control, or security. Sometimes we turn toward healthy things. Other times we lean on habits, distractions, or temporary solutions that can’t actually hold us together.

In John 10, Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd who leads, protects, and stays with His people. Unlike the thief or the hired hand, Jesus doesn’t abandon us when life gets hard. He invites us to trust Him instead of everything else pulling at us.

This conversation is about honestly asking ourselves: What am I really depending on when pressure hits?

Opening Prayer

God, thank You for bringing us together tonight.
Help us be honest about the things we run to when life feels heavy.
Give us wisdom, openness, and peace as we talk together.
Amen.

Conversation Starters

Option A (Light)

What’s your go-to comfort food, show, or activity after a stressful day?

Option B (Deeper)

When life feels overwhelming, what’s your first instinct?

Scripture

John 10:10–15 (NIV)

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

“The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.

The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.”

Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Real Life Application

What would it look like to intentionally turn toward Jesus first this week?

Is there one practical step you can take to reconnect with God under pressure instead of drifting away?

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank You for being a Shepherd who never abandons us.
When life feels heavy or uncertain, help us turn toward You instead of things that cannot truly sustain us.
Teach us to trust Your voice and follow Your lead this week.
Amen.

Next Steps

You don’t have to navigate pressure alone.
Keep the conversation going with someone you trust this week, and if you’re in Tallahassee, we’d love for you to join us Sunday as we continue following Jesus together.
