Is church optional?

It's a question more people are asking today. If faith feels personal, does community really matter?

Jesus answered that question before anyone else could.

On the night before the cross, He prayed that His followers would be united—not just because it's nice to have friends, but because our love for one another would help the world believe who He is. Community wasn't an afterthought. It was part of God's plan from the very beginning.

It's easy to believe we can follow Jesus on our own. We live in a culture that values independence, and online options make it possible to stay connected without ever really knowing anyone.

But following Jesus was never meant to be a solo journey.

The first followers of Jesus didn't just gather once a week. They shared meals, prayed together, learned together, encouraged one another, and walked through everyday life side by side. Their faith grew because they stayed connected, and that genuine community became one of the clearest pictures of God's love to the people around them.

That's where the tension shows up for many of us.

We may believe in Jesus, but still keep people at a distance. We may attend church without truly belonging. We may know about God while missing the relationships He designed to help us grow.

The truth is, we all need people who encourage us, challenge us, pray for us, and remind us of God's faithfulness when life gets difficult.

Following Jesus isn't just about agreeing with His teaching. It's about becoming more like Him—and that happens best in community. We all have blind spots, struggles, and seasons when we need someone to remind us not to give up. That's why Scripture repeatedly points us toward gathering, encouraging one another, and growing together.

Church isn't simply a place you attend.

It's a family you belong to.

It's people who celebrate with you, carry burdens with you, pray for you, and help you keep your eyes on Jesus when life gets hard. That's the kind of community Jesus prayed for, and it's still His vision for His followers today.

You can't follow Jesus alone—not because God isn't enough, but because He designed His people to grow together.

If you've been watching from a distance or wondering whether church really matters, maybe this is your invitation to take one simple step toward community.

You don't have to have everything figured out.

You just have to be willing to take the next step.

If you're looking for a place to grow in your faith and build genuine relationships, we'd love to welcome you this Sunday. Join us as we continue following Jesus together here in Tallahassee.
