Jesus said, “I am the door.”

That may sound strange at first. We usually think of Jesus as a teacher, healer, Savior, or shepherd. But in John 10, Jesus describes himself as the door for the sheep. He is the way into safety, provision, freedom, and life.

And then he says this:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
John 10:10

Abundant life does not begin when we finally get everything under control. It begins when we surrender to the One who actually knows how to lead us.

Day 1: Jesus Is the Door

Scripture: John 10:7–10

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Scripture: Psalm 23:1–3

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters,

    he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths

    for his name’s sake.

Jesus does not offer us a vague path toward a better life. He offers himself.

He is the door. He is the entrance into safety, salvation, provision, and life with God. We do not have to climb over the wall, prove ourselves worthy, or find another way in. Jesus makes the way open.

But entering through Jesus also means surrendering our self-made ways of finding life. We cannot receive him as the door while still insisting on every other exit.

Reflection Questions:

Where are you tempted to look for life apart from Jesus?

What would it look like to trust Jesus as the doorway into what your soul actually needs?

Is there an area where you are still trying to climb in another way?

Prayer:
Jesus, you are the door. Help me stop looking for life in places that cannot save me. Lead me into the life only you can give.

Breath Prayer:
Inhale: Jesus, my Shepherd
Exhale: Lead me into life

Day 2: Control Cannot Give You Abundant Life

Scripture: Proverbs 3:5–6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart

    and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways submit to him,

and he will make your paths straight.

Scripture: Luke 9:23–24

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.

Control can feel safe. It can feel responsible. It can even feel spiritual.

But control cannot give us abundant life.

Jesus does not call us to manage our way into peace. He calls us to trust him. That kind of trust often feels like losing control, but it is actually the beginning of freedom.

Surrender is not passivity. It is choosing to place your life in the hands of the One who sees you, knows you, protects you, and provides for you.

Reflection Questions:

What are you trying hardest to control right now?

How is that control affecting your peace, your relationships, or your faith?

What is one practical way you can surrender that area to Jesus today?

Prayer:
Father, I confess that I often reach for control before I reach for you. Teach me to trust you with the things I cannot fix, manage, or force.

Breath Prayer:
Inhale: Father, I trust you
Exhale: Not my control

Day 3: The Shepherd Knows Your Name

Scripture: John 10:3–4

The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.

Scripture: Isaiah 40:11

He tends his flock like a shepherd:

He gathers the lambs in his arms

and carries them close to his heart;

he gently leads those that have young.

Jesus does not lead his people from a distance. He knows his sheep by name.

That means you are not invisible to him. You are not just part of a crowd. You are seen, known, and personally loved.

Surrender becomes possible when we remember who is asking for our trust. Jesus is not a stranger demanding control. He is the Shepherd who knows your voice, your fears, your needs, and your name.

Reflection Questions:

Do you tend to believe Jesus sees you personally, or only generally?

Where do you need to remember that Jesus knows your name?

How might being deeply known by Jesus change the way you pray today?

Prayer:
Jesus, thank you for seeing me. Thank you for knowing my name. Help me hear your voice above every other voice calling for my attention.

Breath Prayer:
Inhale: Jesus, you see me
Exhale: I know your voice

Day 4: The Thief Always Takes

Scripture: John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Scripture: 1 Peter 5:8–9

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

Jesus is honest about the enemy’s purpose. The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy.

But temptation rarely looks destructive at first. It often looks like relief, happiness, success, comfort, or control. The danger is that we start believing something other than Jesus can give us life.

Surrender means learning to recognize the voices that take from us, even when they promise to give.

Reflection Questions:

What voices or influences are shaping you most right now?

Where have you believed something would give life, only to find it taking more from you?

What boundary or choice would help you listen more clearly to Jesus?

Prayer:
Lord, give me wisdom to recognize what is stealing life from me. Help me turn away from false promises and follow your voice.

Breath Prayer:
Inhale: Good Shepherd
Exhale: Guard my heart

Day 5: Abundant Life Is Found in Christ

Scripture: Romans 6:3–4

Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
Scripture: Colossians 2:12

In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

Scripture: Psalm 23:5–6

You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

    my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and love will follow me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord

    forever.

Abundant life is not the absence of struggle. It is life with God now and forever.

Jesus laid down his life so we could pass through the door into forgiveness, freedom, and new life. Through his death and resurrection, we are invited to die to the old life and be raised into something new.

That means surrender is not the end of life. It is the way into life.

Not more control. More trust.
Not more striving. More surrender.
Not another way around Jesus. Life through Jesus.

Reflection Questions:

How would you define abundant life based on Jesus’ words?

Where do you need to die to self so you can live more fully in Christ?

What would it look like to pursue Jesus more personally this week?

Prayer:
Jesus, thank you for laying down your life for me. I want the abundant life you give. Help me surrender what keeps me from trusting you fully.

Breath Prayer:
Inhale: Jesus, my life
Exhale: I surrender all
